Marian University women’s volleyball (2-2, 0-0 NACC) bounced back from a four-set loss to Concordia College finishing the Red Hawks Invitational with a five-set win over Martin Luther.

VS. CONCORDIA COLLEGE (L, 3-1, 25-15, 18-25, 25-19, 27-25)

  • The Cobbers opened the match with a sizable 13-5 lead in the opening set.
  • Marian trimmed the deficit to four at 14-10, but Concordia College responded with a 9-2 spurt to take the first set.
  • A 9-3 run early in the second set helped give the Sabres a 13-8 advantage.
  • Marian was able to maintain this advantage and closed out the set scoring four of the final five points.
  • The two sides battled to a 14-14 stalemate to begin the crucial third set.
  • The Cobbers then pulled away and took the set thanks to a 9-2 run.
  • Marian led late in the fourth and brought the score to 24-22.
  • The Sabres were denied on three set-point chances only for CC to convert on their first chance to take the match.

VS. MARTIN LUTHER (W, 3-2, 31-29, 25-18, 22-25, 21-25, 20-18)

  • Marian held a late 21-15 advantage in the opener only for MLC to score seven straight points and lead 22-21.
  • Each team had multiple chances to finish the set but a Cassandra Arndt kill sandwiched between two kills from Morgan Simac gave Marian the first set.
  • A 10-1 run early in the second set helped give Marian a 13-6 lead.
  • This time Marian didn’t let the Knights back in the set to eventually take a 2-0 lead.
  • The two sides were stalemated at 22-22 late in the third set, but this time it was MLC who scored three straight to force a fourth set.
  • The fourth set was also knotted late at 19-19 before five straight points from MLC eventually forced a fifth set.
  • After a 6-6 start to the fifth, Marian was able to build a comfortable lead with a 7-1 run.
  • The Sabres had match point at 14-8 only for the Knights to score six straight to stay alive.
  • Just like the first set, both sides had multiple chances to claim the match but it was Kylie Krueger who sealed the win for Marian.

VS. CONCORDIA COLLEGE

  • The Cobbers finished with a 50-40 edge in kills and 58-56 advantage in digs.
  • Concordia hit at least .212 in the three sets they won.
  • Marian is 1-3 all-time against Concordia College with this being the third meeting since 2022.

VS. MARTIN LUTHER

  • Marian had a 62-48 edge in kills and 112-96 advantage in digs.
  • The 112 digs is the most in a single match since Sept. 23, 2022 against Governors State.
  • The Sabre defense limited MLC to a .073 attack percentage in the match.
  • Marian is now 4-3 all-time against Martin Luther and 4-1 over the last five meetings.
  • The Sabres were just 1-7 in five-set matches last season.
