Marian Women’s Volleyball Snaps Skid with Win Over Concordia

Marian University women’s volleyball (5-6, 0-0 NACC) split the final day of the Sandy Schumacher Tournament falling to Colorado College in straight sets before defeating Concordia College in five sets.

VS. COLORADO COLLEGE (25-22, 25-14, 25-12)

  • Marian hung tight with the Tigers only trailing 14-12 in the opening set.
  • Colorado College built its lead out to nine points at 23-14 but Marian didn’t back down.
  • The Sabres were able to go on an 8-1 run and fight off four set-point chances to only trail 24-22.
  • A kill the next point ended the set, however.
  • The Tigers jumped ahead early in set two and never looked back in the second set.
  • The third set had Marian only trailing 9-8 before Colorado College went on a 13-2 spurt to pull ahead

VS. CONCORDIA COLLEGE (26-24, 16-25, 27-25, 23-25, 15-12)

  • The largest lead in the opening set was only three points and saw the Cobbers lead 23-21.
  • Marian rallied from the deficit and finished the set on a 5-1 run.
  • Marian led 16-14 in the second set but Concordia had a strong finish with 11 consecutive points.
  • The third set was similar to the first with the largest lead being only four points eventually leading to Concordia leading 24-21.
  • Marian fought off four set-point chances in total before finishing the set with a 6-1 spurt.
  • The Sabres faced a similar deficit in the fourth trailing 24-20 before battling off three set points.
  • Concordia managed to stave off the late comeback the next point and forced a fifth set.
  • The fifth set opened a 5-5 stalemate before Marian used a 7-2 spurt to lead by five points.
  • Concordia Chicago closed the deficit down to one but a kill and ace from the Sabres gave Marian a victory.

  • Marian finished with a 69-50 advantage in kills and 106-101 edge in digs.  
  • The Sabres would only hit .128 while the Cobbers had an attack percentage of .141.
  • Marian had at least double-digit kills in four of the sets against Concordia College including the third set where Marian had 20 kills.
  • The match-up with Colorado College was the first between the two schools.
  • Marian earned its first win over the Cobbers in three all-time matches.

Senior Riley Shores had the first double-double of her career against Concordia posting 16 kills with 15 digs.
Sophomore Ryanne Jasica posted her fourth double-double against the Cobbers with 15 kills and 22 digs.
Freshman Kaylie Engebose assisted on a career-high 53 kills, her second performance this season with more than 50 assists.
