Marian women’s volleyball finishes regular season at Pumpkin Bash

Marian University women’s volleyball (15-11, 7-6 NACC) fell to Central College and Coe in the regular season finale.

MARIAN VS. CENTRAL COLLEGE / 25-18, 25-16, 25-23

  • The first set saw the Sabres jump out to a quick 7-3 lead.
  • Central was able to take the lead behind a 7-2 run and extended its lead by as large as nine 19-10.
  • The Sabres showed some life and ended the game on a 7-6 run but the Central lead proved to be enough to hold off the Sabres.
  • The second set saw both teams trading points with Central taking slight 8-7 advantage.
  • Central would never surrender its lead and cruise to a set two win. 
  • Set three had a similar beginning as set two with the teams trading points but Marian had the advantage this time at 9-7. 
  • Marian would extend its lead as large as seven at 15-8 but Central would not go away quietly. 
  • Central was able to go on a 10-2 run to take the lead 18-17. 
  • Central would go on a 6-4 run to get to set point 24-21
  • The Sabres held off two Central set points but a Marian attacking error would end set three and the match.

MARIAN VS. COE / 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22.

  • The two squads battled back and forth to open the match with Coe holding the 10-9 advantage before a 7-2 run would give the Kohawks a six point lead. 
  • Marian crawled back into set one and made things interesting behind an 11-5 run to tie things up 22-22.
  • Coe would close out set one on a 3-1 run behind three Kohawk kills.
  • Marian came out in set two on a 5-1 run before the Kohawks closed the gap and was able to take the lead with a 7-2 run. 
  • The Kohawks would extend its lead to seven at 14-8 and would take set two with the teams trading points in an even 11-11 run.
  • Set three saw Coe take the early lead behind a 10-4 run. 
  • Marian was able to answer behind a 9-3 run to tie things up 13-13 and eventually take the lead at 15-14. 
  • Marian then went on a 9-6 run to get to set point.
  • Coe held off the Sabres on three set point opportunities but a kill by junior Riley Shores gave Marian the set three win. 
  • The Kohawks would start set four on a 9-5 run before the Sabres went on a run of its own to take the lead 10-9.
  • Coe was able to take and extend its lead behind a 8-4 run. 
  • The Sabres would not go away without a fight after tying things up 19-19 before the Kohawks would end the game on a 6-3 run to take the match.

MARIAN VS. CENTRAL COLLEGE

  • The Sabre defense held a slight 3-2 advantage in blocks. 
  • Marian held Central to a .172 hitting percentage but the Sabre offense couldn’t get things going only hitting .010. 
  • Marian was able to force 18 Coe hitting errors but committed 27 of its own. 
  • Central remains in control of the all-time series between the two teams 4-0. 

MARIAN VS. COE

  • Despite the Kohawks holding the advantage in hitting percentage .188 to the Sabres .159, Marian held the advantage in kills 58-48. 
  • The Sabres recorded 55 assists to the Kohawks 39.
  • Marian also held the advantage in digs 67-60.

Freshman Olivia Buol had a strong day from the front row after recording 26 total kills between the two matches with a career high 17 against Coe. 
Sophomore Alana McDermott paced the back row with 25 total digs between both sets.
Cami Arno headshot Freshman Cami Arno finished with 38 assists on the day with 28 coming against Coe.
