Marian women’s volleyball earns pair of sweeps

Marian University women’s volleyball (5-5, 0-1 NACC) snapped a three-match losing streak defeating Mount Mary and Northland in straight sets.

MOUNT MARY VS. MARIAN / 25-8, 25-15, 25-18

  • Marian wasted no time jumping ahead of Mount Mary using a 14-0 run to take a 19-2 lead and cruise to a set win.
  • MMU opened with a slim 4-2 lead to open the second before Marian scored 12 of the next 14 points to go ahead 14-6.
  • A 7-2 spurt at the end of the set helped put the Sabres ahead 2-0.
  • The two squads opened the third set knotted at seven apiece.
  • Marian took control and cruised to.a sweep after scoring 13 straight points after the 7-7 opening.

NORTHLAND VS. MARIAN / 25-10, 25-21, 25-17

  • The match opened with a back-and-forth 9-6 lead for Marian.
  • The Sabres would outscore Northland 16-4 the rest of the way including five straight to end the set.
  • The second set proved to be the most competitive set of the day as the two squads battled to a 14-14 tie.
  • Marian scored four unanswered to go ahead 18-14 in what proved to be the difference.
  • The LumberJills opened the third with a quick 6-2 advantage.
  • Marian was able to chip away at the lead and eventually scored six unanswered to go ahead 14-11.
  • Another spurt of five unanswered for the Sabres put Marian ahead 20-13 and allowed the Sabres to secure its third sweep of the season.

 In both matches Marian finished with at least 40 kills and 50 digs for the fifth and sixth times this season.

MOUNT MARY VS. MARIAN

  • The Marian defense held the Blue Angels to a negative hitting percentage at -.023 and only allowed nine kills.
  • The Sabres set a season-high with 16 aces from the service line.
  • On the offensive side, Marian hit .225 for the match, third-highest for the season.
  • Marian has now won eight straight matches against Mount Mary.

NORTHLAND VS. MARIAN

  • The Sabre offense hit at least .244 in all three sets producing at least 12 kills.
  • Marian was able to once again get it done at the service line with 11 aces.
  • The Sabre middle hitter duo of senior Serina Pehowski and sophomore Harley Bartels had 23 kills and hit .488.
  • The win snapped a four-match losing streak against the LumberJills and was the first meeting between the two squads since 2010.

Senior Kaitlyn Merrill led both teams with 10 kills and hit .429 in the sweep.
Senior Andrea Miller had a match-high 13 digs to go with five service aces.
Cami Arno headshot Freshman Cami Arno finished with 33 assists, three service aces, and six digs.

NORTHLAND VS. MARIAN

Senior Serina Pehowski had a match-high 12 kills and hit .409.
Harley Bartels headshot Sophomore Harley Bartels added 11 kills and didn’t commit an error to finish hitting .579.
Sophomore Alana McDermott finished with 16 digs to pace both squads.
