Marian women’s soccer holds off late CUC rally

Marian University women’s soccer (6-3-3, 5-2-0 NACC) defeated Concordia Chicago 2-1 for its second straight road win.

  • Marian was able to control pace of play for most of the game.
  • The Sabres were able to open the scoring when freshman Emily Gordillo netted her fifth goal of the season at the 33:33 mark.
  • The 1-0 advantage held up for the Sabres going into halftime.
  • Senior Taylor Perl nearly put Marian ahead by two but her shot in the 67th minute would hit the crossbar.
  • Sophomore Brianna Guelig scored her first goal of the season shortly after in the 73rd minute to give the Sabres a multi-goal advantage.  Perl and junior Abby Larson each earned an assist on the goal.
  • The Cougars were able to cut the deficit back down to 2-1 scoring just 5:38 later, but the Sabres were able to hold on for the 2-1 final.

  • Marian finished with a 28-10 edge in shots and 10-5 advantage for shots on goal.
  • Concordia Chicago was able to create 12 corner-kick chances to only six for Marian.
  • Marian improved to 4-1-1 over the last six meetings against CUC with the win.
  • The Sabres are now 5-2-2 in road match-ups on the season.

Sophomore Brianna Guelig came off the bench to score the game-winner.
Senior Jazmine Barrios (1-0-1) made four saves to earn a win in the first start of her career.
