Marian women’s soccer goes down to wire with Edgewood

Marian University women’s soccer (6-6-3, 3-4-1 NACC) remained tied for 63 minutes, before ultimately falling to Edgewood, 2-1.

  • Both teams recorded shots on goal in the first eight minutes of play, but were held to two shots on goal each for the entirety of the first half.
  • In a controlled tempo first half, the teams went into the break tied at zero.
  • In the 63rd minute, Edgewood’s Greta Blau opened the floodgates with her seventh goal of the season to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
  • At 67:51, Stephanie Kalscheur extended the Eagles lead to two with a left side tap-in from Kamy Luecke.
  • Senior Brianna Guelig was able to trim the lead to one off an assist by junior Emily Gordillo at 89:15, but time ran out and the Eagles escaped with a 2-1 victory.

  • The Sabres trailed the Eagles in shots with an 11-5 deficit, and 4-3 in shots on goal. 
  • Both teams were even in corner kicks with two each. The Sabres recorded both of their corners in the second half.
  • Marian drew plenty of fouls on Edgewood, with the Eagles being called for 17 fouls, compared to the Sabres nine.
  • The loss sent the all-time series to 10-32-4 against the Eagles.
  • Tonight marked Marian’s first loss to Edgewood since 2016. The previous eight contests all resulted in a win or draw.
