Marian University women’s soccer (1-1-1, 0-0-0 NACC) earned a 2-1 victory over Whittier College to close out its trip to California.
- The Sabres started strong with Emily Gordillo recording a wide shot at the 1:46 mark.
- The Poets answered back at 13:11, scoring a goal to take an early 1-0 lead in the first half.
- At 43:03, Marian found the back of the net when Anna Riley scored off an assist from Cielo Gutierrez, evening the score at 1-1.
- With just 15 seconds remaining in the first half, Whittier threatened to retake the lead with a header, but Cristal Muniz made the save to keep the Sabres level at halftime.
- The Sabres and Poets continued to battle with high offensive pressure coming out of the halftime break.
- Marian was the first to break through, as Gordillo found the back of the net to give the Sabres the lead in the 60th minute.
- As the minutes counted down, Whittier continued to apply offensive pressure, outshooting Marian 9-6 in the final stretch of the second half.
- Despite the Poets’ offensive push, the Sabre defense held strong, securing the 2-1 victory.
- Whittier outshot Marian 14-12, but the Sabres held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Sabres and Poets finished even in penalty corners with four apiece.
