Marian women’s hockey earns first nationally-ranked victory

Marian University women’s ice hockey  (3-3-0, 1-3-0 NCHA) earned its first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent defeating No. 6/6 St. Norbert 2-1 in overtime.

  • Similarly to the opener, the opening period solved nothing as both defenses kept the score at 0-0.
  • Marian was able to open the scoring at the 9:22 mark of the second period when junior Olivia Church-Sowinski scored on a power play.
  • Sophomore Zowie Hunter and junior Jessica Tadevich each assisted the goal which gave Marian a 1-0 lead going into the third.
  • Marian held its advantage for most of the period only for SNC to score with 2:42 left to force overtime.
  • It didn’t take Marian long to take the extra point, however, as junior Ella Spies scored 30 seconds into overtime with an assist from freshman Yazmine Gonzalez.

  • Marian was outshot 38-23 in the gamebut had 18 of their shots over the final two periods.
  • St. Norbert held a 43-16 advantage on draws.
  • This is the first victory for Marian over a nationally-ranked opponent, 1-3-0 on the season.
  • Marian earns its first win over SNC since the 2018-19 season.

Junior Ella Spies netted the game-winner, her second goal of the year.
Junior Olivia Church-Sowinski scored her second goal of the season.
