Marian women’s hockey completes sweep of Dubuque

Marian University women’s ice hockey  (5-3-0, 3-3-0 NCHA) defeated Dubuque 4-2 to complete a sweep of the Spartans.

  • Marian couldn’t have started better as junior Catherine Yasenak opened the scoring with help from sophomore Piper Miller and freshman Jillian Newhouse just 16 seconds into the game.
  • Sophomore Zowie Hunter then put Marian ahead 2-0 going into the second period after scoring in the final minute of the opening stanza, assist to Miller.
  • The Spartans struck quickly, just 1:36 into the second period, to cut their deficit to one.
  • The 2-1 Marian advantage held going into the final period before senior Logan Crawford scored 1:23 into the final stanza with help from sophomore Olivia Laube.
  • A power-play goal from the Spartans at the 5:13 mark once again cut the Marian lead down to one at 3-2.
  • Hunter was able to put the game away with her second goal of the game just 1:16 later, assists to senior Caitlin Traver and freshman Yazmine Gonzalez.

  • Face-offs were nearly even with Dubuque winning 28 and Marian 27.
  • The Spartans were 1-for-4 on the power play, while Marian was scoreless on five attempts.

Freshman Gretchen Woelber (1-2-0) earned her first collegiate win stopping 21 shots.
Sophomore Piper Miller had another pair of helpers to finish the series with four assists.
