Marian University women’s basketball (0-5, 0-1 NACC) played a competitive final three quarters in a 71-46 loss at Lawrence.
- In what has been a common occurrence so far this season, the Sabres got off to a slow start. Lawrence was able to jump out to 27-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Senior Chelsea King scored the first five Marian points before the team was held scoreless for over five minutes of play.
- The Sabres started to shift the energy early in the second quarter with sophomore Nyedeng Awak giving the team a spark. Awak grabbed the first three rebounds of the second quarter for Marian, leading to a second chance layup at 8:11.
- After trailing by as much as 27, the Sabres were able to trim the deficit down to 20 entering the break. The Sabres held the Vikings to only one field goal in the final five minutes.
- Marian carried the same defensive intensity into the third quarter. The Sabres recorded six steals in the quarter, including three from freshman Holly Goodwin.
- Once again closing the quarter strong, Marian held the Vikings scoreless in the last three minutes. Freshman Ava Kreger ended the quarter with an and-one layup to make it 56-35.
- Lawrence maintained its lead in the fourth quarter, but the Sabres remained invested. Awak stayed hungry on the glass, grabbing three more offensive rebounds and leading to multiple second chance opportunities.
- The Sabres were only outscored by six points in the final three quarters.
- Lawrence saw two players responsible for 52 of their 71 points. Guard Kate Adams finished with 32 points and six three-pointers, while forward Sophie Morey added 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Vikings.
- The Sabres led in bench points, with a 22-13 advantage.
- Marian turned the ball over 32 times in the contest, leading to 24 points off turnovers for the Vikings.
- After shooting 10-for-16 (.625) in the first quarter, Marian held the Vikings to 18-for-53 (.340) shooting for the remainder of the game. This included limiting the Vikings to 6-for-21 (.285) shooting in the second quarter with a 0-for-7 (.000) clip from beyond the arc.
- Marian once again struggled to get to the line, only shooting three free-throws compared to Lawrence’s ten attempts.
- The Sabres trail the Vikings 20-11 all-time, with the Vikings winning the last five match-ups, including an 80-75 overtime victory at Sadoff Gym last January.
