Marian women’s basketball pulls away from IIT in home finale

Marian University women’s basketball (7-16, 5-9 NACC) never trailed defeating Illinois Tech 73-60 in the final home game of its season.

  • Marian couldn’t miss in the opening minutes and quickly jumped out to a 14-3 lead.
  • The Sabres built its lead out to as large as 12 points and took a 23-15 lead into the second quarter.
  • After trailing 25-17 with 7:21 left in the second, IIT showed life scoring six unanswered points to only trail by two.
  • Marian was able to hold off the rally and quickly built its lead back out to 32-25.
  • Illinois Tech had a response finishing the half with a small 7-3 spurt to only trail 35-32 at halftime.
  • The Sabres hit a  pair of triples to open the third quarter and the game was at least two possessions for the remainder of the quarter.
  • Marian would head into the fourth ahead 48-43.
  • IIT would hit the first basket of the final quarter to only trail three, but Marian responded with an 11-2 run to lead 59-47 and 5:59 to play.
  • One final push saw the Scarlet Hawks trim its deficit to six only for Marian to pull away with a 9-1 run.
  • The Sabres would lead by as much as 15 with the final score settling at 73-60.

  • Marian shot 29-of-68 (.426) for the game and 12-of-25 (.480) from beyond the arc.  The 12 triples was a season-high for the Sabres.
  • Illinois Tech finished 23-of-72 (.319) and 7-of-23 (.304) on three-pointers.
  • The Sabres had all five starters score double-digit points.
  • Illinois Tech outscored Marian 12-2 in second chance points despite being out-rebounded 50-38.
  • Marian has now won all six meetings against Illinois Tech.

Junior Lexi Brakebush scored eight points in the fourth quarter to finish with a team-high 15.  She also had a game-high five assists.
Junior McKayla Goebel scored a career-high 14 points to go with three assists and two steals.
Sophomore Chelsea King produced her second double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.  She also had three blocks and two steals.
