Marian women’s basketball earns first win in dominant fashion

Marian University women’s basketball (1-8, 0-3 NACC) picked up its first win of the season with a lopsided 93-23 victory over Maranatha Baptist.

  • After holding a 10-9 lead with 4:42 remaining in the first quarter, Marian went on a 24-0 run that extended into the second quarter. During the run, the Sabres recorded six steals, creating numerous fast break opportunities. 
  • Freshman Dasha Yeltysheva scored nine of her career-high 14 points in the second quarter.
  • Back-to-back fastbreak scores off steals from senior Chelsea King highlighted her six-steal performance. 
  • The Sabres outscored the Sabercats 36-2 in the second quarter, building a 50-point halftime lead at 61-11. 
  • The second half played out similarly, with the Sabres ending the third quarter on an 11-0 run to extend their lead to 62. 
  • Freshman Cheyenne Tyciak scored all seven of her points in the fourth quarter, keeping Marian in the driver’s seat. 
  • Freshman Holly Goodwin scored the Sabres’ final six points, helping Marian roll to a 93-23 win.

  • The 93 points were the most the Sabres have scored in a game since a 114-32 win over Valley Forge Christian during the 2006-07 season. 
  • The Sabres registered season highs in field goals made (40), three-point field goals made (8), assists (18), and steals (26).
  • Seven Sabres finished with either season or career-high point totals. 
  • Behind their 26 steals, Marian held a 43-6 edge in points off turnovers. 
  • The Sabres own a 39-8 all-time series record over the Sabercats. 
  • The 70-point win marked the largest margin of victory in series history.

Freshman Dasha Yeltysheva had scored in double figures for her first time as a Sabre, finishing with 14 points, four assists, and four rebounds. 
Senior Chelsea King registered a career-high six steals and added 12 points. 
Freshman Holly Goodwin contributed a career-high 10 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the field.
