Marian University Mourns Sudden Loss of Long-time Employee

Staff and Faculty at Marian University, along with Sisters of the Congregation of St. Agnes, gathered in Dorcas Chapel this morning to grieve over the sudden loss of Janet Wermes, a long-time administrative assistant, who died as the result of a motor vehicle crash near Fond du Lac on Friday morning on her way to work.  Wermes held several positions in her time at Marian, but most recently worked for the Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. R. Brian Olson.

Wermes was an anchor at the university, a well-known, steadfast, kind person whom everyone relied on.  She just celebrated her 20-year anniversary with Marian a few months earlier.  Dr. Joshua Clary, Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students, organized the memorial to give the Marian community a space to grieve and allow Wermes’ colleagues to share stories.  Wermes’ daughter, Nora, and son-in-law, Adam, were also present.

Michelle Majewski, President at Marian University, gave an emotion-filled testimony, talking about Wermes’ kindness, compassion and witty sense of humor.  “Janet was an amazing colleague, an amazing friend and an amazing member of the Marian family,” said Dr. Majewski.

Dr. Olson spoke of Wermes as a woman of great faith.  Brenda Stueber, Associate Professor of Social Work, talked about how Wermes was kind, humble and had a calming influence.  Sarah Garvey, Associate Professor of Chemistry, said Wermes would always ask about her two daughters and talk about her own daughter, Nora.  Garvey also said Wermes would provide markers and, “Sneak an extra piece of candy to my kids.

Kathleen Candee, Senior Vice President of Advancement and Alumni Relations, told Wermes’ daughter Nora, “We are your family here at Marian and we will continue to be your family.”

Because Wermes was so punctual, she was immediately missed when she was not at Marian University by 7:30 am on Friday.  By Friday afternoon, Dr. Majewski sent out an email to the entire Marian University community, sharing the sad news.  “Janet was loved by all who knew her,” said Dr. Majewski in the email, “She was a kind, gracious, hard-working, highly competent colleague who joined Marian University over 20 years ago, serving in a variety of positions over the years.  As we have more information, we will be sure to share it with you.  In the meantime, please keep her family in your prayers.”

Funeral arrangements by Wermes’ family are pending.
