Marian University Announces Strategic Realignment of Athletic Programs to Strengthen Student-Athlete Experience

Strategic decision reinforces commitment to student success, competitive excellence, and long-term sustainability of Marian athletics

Marian University (Wisconsin) has announced a strategic realignment of its athletic offerings, including the planned discontinuation of its men’s and women’s lacrosse programs. This decision reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to providing a high-quality, mission-driven experience for all student-athletes while ensuring responsible stewardship of institutional resources.

Following a comprehensive internal review, university leadership identified persistent challenges impacting the long-term sustainability of the lacrosse programs, including regional recruiting limitations, roster depth concerns, and increasing operational demands. The evaluation emphasized Marian’s focus on aligning athletics with its broader mission and core values of academic excellence, community engagement, social justice, and student success.

“Decisions like this are never easy,” Tony Draves, Marian University Athletic Director, said. “However, this strategic shift allows us to invest more deeply in programs where we see strong participation, competitive growth, and alignment with our institutional strengths. Our goal is to create the best possible experience for all Marian student-athletes.”

The university will redirect resources currently supporting lacrosse toward strengthening existing programs and exploring opportunities for growth in areas with stronger regional recruiting pipelines. This reinvestment is expected to enhance roster development, competitive performance, and overall student engagement across Marian athletics.

Marian University is committed to supporting all current lacrosse student athletes through this transition. The university will provide individualized guidance, including academic continuity, financial aid assurance, and assistance with transfer opportunities for those who wish to continue competing at the collegiate level.

“This decision reflects thoughtful planning and a student-first approach,” Draves added. “We are proud of the contributions our lacrosse student athletes have made to Marian, and we remain dedicated to supporting them every step of the way.”

The transition will be effective immediately. The implementation plan will be done with care and transparency, ensuring all affected students, families, and stakeholders are informed and supported throughout the process.
