Marian softball sweeps opening day of THE Spring Games

Marian University baseball (2-0, 0-0 NACC) defeated Westminster 8-5 and Regis 4-2 to open the season.

GAME 1 (WESTMINSTER – W, 8-5)

  • Both teams had chances early but it wouldn’t be until the third that Westminster opened the scoring with a 1-0 tally.
  • The Sabres quickly responded scoring five runs in the bottom half of the frame.
  • Senior Katelyn Matenaer opened the scoring for Marian with a double that drove in two runs.
  • Junior Kendall Pliner would later bring in two runs with a double of her own as Marian.
  • Another double from Pliner, K. in the fifth extended the Sabre advantage to 6-1.
  • Westminster was able to tally three runs in the top of the sixth to only trail 6-4 but Marian had an answer once again.
  • Pliner, K. was at it again with a run-producing single followed by a sacrifice fly from sophomore Morgan Mack gave Marian an 8-4 lead.
  • The Titans made things interesting in the seventh scoring once and loading the bases but Marian held on for the 8-5 win.

GAME 2 (REGIS – W, 4-2)

  • In game two of the day it was Marian who struck first when freshman Erin Cowe drove in a pair of runs with a single in the second.
  • Regis was able to respond with a pair of runs in the third to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Marian was able to retake the lead in the sixth when Pliner, K. drove in another run with a double.
  • Sophomore Riley Mankowski would score later in the inning as Marian built a 4-2 advantage.
  • The Pride would put a runner in scoring position in the final two innings but the Sabres were once again able to stand tall to secure the sweep.

GAME 1

Junior Kendall Pliner went 3-for-4 with four runs driven in in her first game as a Sabre.
Freshman Sabrina Di Vito (1-0) allowed just three runs over 5.0 innings to earn a win in the first start of her collegiate career.
Senior Katelyn Matenaer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two more driven in.

GAME 2 

Senior Kendall Pliner (1-0) allowed just two runs over 5.0 innings to win her first start of the year.
Freshman Erin Cowe was the only student-athlete between the two teams with multiple runs driven in.
Freshman Savanna Knuth reached base in all three plate appearances going 1-for-1 with two walks and a run scored.
