Marian softball splits twin bill at Edgewood

Marian University softball (14-12, 8-6 NACC) beat Edgewood 10-9 before falling to the Eagles 11-3 in six innings in a NACC doubleheader.

GAME 1

  • Marian jumped out early on the Eagles scoring four runs in the top of the second inning to open the scoring.
  • Freshman Mackenzie Christofferson plated a pair of runs to open the scoring for the game.
  • Edgewood responded with two runs in the next half inning but the Sabres would plate four more runs in the third to lead 8-2.
  • Senior Evelynn Spaeth and freshman Erin Cowe each drove in a run with a double before senior Katelyn Matenaer hit a home run to put an exclamation point on the frame.
  • After another Edgewood run came across in the third, sophomore Abigail Schreiber would score in the top of the fourth to put Marian ahead 9-3.
  • Mateanaer would hit her second long ball of the game in the sixth to give Marian a 10-3 advantage
  • Edgewood was able to put together a rally in the top of the seventh plating six runs but Marian was able to hold on for the win.

GAME 2

  • Matenaer would lead off the second game with her third home run of the day to give Marian an early lead.
  • This lead would only last until the second when Edgewood plated a pair of its first lead of the day.
  • The Eagles would plate another pair in the third to build a 4-1 lead.
  • Productive outs from Spaeth and Cowe in the fourth saw Marian trim its deficit down to 4-3.
  • A home run in the fifth and a five-run sixth from the Eagles would end the game early, however.

Senior Katelyn Matenaer went 4-for-6 on the day with three home runs, five runs driven in, and four runs scored.
Freshman Sabrina Di Vito (5-6) earned the win in game one going 5.2 innings allowing just one earned run.
Freshman Erin Cowe had a hit and drove in a run in each game to go with two runs scored.
