Marian softball opens final weekend with sweep at WLC

Marian University softball (20-16, 15-7 NACC) defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 5-1 and 9-1 in six innings to open the final weekend of the regular season.

GAME 1

  • Marian had a slow start but were able to limit the damage allowing just one run in the first inning.
  • The 1-0 deficit held until the fifth when a first-and-third pickle allowed juior Sofia Cerullo to score and tie the game.
  • Cerullo then gave Marian its first lead in the seventh with a run-producing single. 
  • Senior Kendall Pliner and sophomore Sabrina Di Vito followed by driving in runs to put Marian ahead 5-1.
  • A quiet bottom half of the seventh saw Marian close out the comeback win.

GAME 2

  • The Sabres opened the scoring for game two with a three-run third that was highlighted by a double from junior Riley Mankowski that plated two runs.
  • WLC answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame only for freshman Aubrey Bender to bring home a run in the fifth to put the Sabre lead at 4-1.
  • Marian was able to end the game early plating five runs in the sixth inning.
  • Five different Sabres brought home a run including Bender who drove in her second run of the game.
  • Marian is now 57-17 all-time against WLC having won the last seven games.

Sophomore Sabrina Di Vito (9-7) threw a complete game in the opener allowing just one run.  She also had three hits offensively with two runs driven in.
Senior Kendall Pliner drove in two runs in each game.
Junior Sofia Cerullo was 2-for-4 with two runs and drove in a run in game one.
