Marian softball earns pair of tight wins

| Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Marian University softball (6-2, 0-0 NACC) defeated Wheaton 5-2 and Illinois College 2-1 in its second sweep of the spring trip.

GAME 1 (WHEATON – W, 5-2)

  • Marian was able to strike early in the top of the second when freshmen Sabrina Di Vito and Savanna Knuth brought in a pair of runs.
  • The Sabres added to their lead just an inning later with another two runs to lead 4-0 after three innings.
  • Sophomore Ariana Schliepp and junior Kerena Wood would each come around to score in the frame.
  • Wheaton was able to cut their deficit in half in the fifth to only trail 4-2.
  • The Sabres were able to immediately respond in the next half inning when sophomore Hope Matta was able to drive in Knuth to extend the Marian lead back to 5-2.
  • Some strong defense from Marian played a major factor as Marian would hold off the Thunder for the win.

GAME 2 (ILLINOIS COLLEGE – W, 2-1)

  • Game two was all about defense and pitching as Marian was able to earn its third straight victory.
  • Each team would only put one runner in scoring position through the first four and a half innings
  • Marian was able to put the first runs on the board when Schliepp drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Lady Blues were able to make things interesting plating a run in the top of the seventh but Marian was able to hold off the rally for a one-run victory.

GAME 2 

Senior Cailie Pliner (2-0) tossed a gem allowing just three hits in a complete-game victory.
Freshman Erin Cowe was the lone Sabre with multiple hits going 2-for-3.
Sophomore Ariana Schliepp had the game-winning hit in the fifth with a two-RBI single.
