Marian softball earns first win of spring trip

Marian University softball (1-3, 0-0 NACC) earned an 8-0 mercy-rule win over St. Vincent before falling to Mount St. Joseph 8-2.

GAME 1 (W, 8-0, AWAY)

  • The Sabres were held scoreless in only one inning to earn their first victory of the season defeating St. Vincent.
  • After scoring a run in the second, senior Ariana Schliepp drove in a pair of runs in the third to put Marian ahead 3-0.
  • Juniors Hope Matta and Riley Mankowski added to the Marian lead in the fourth driving in a run to put MU up 5-0.
  • A three-run third saw senior Kendall Pliner and sophomore Savanna Knuth bring in runs to invoke the mercy rule.
  • This was the first meeting between the two programs.

GAME 2 (L, 8-2, HOME)

  • The Lions were able to jump out early scoring a run in the first and two in the third to lead 3-0.
  • Schliepp continued her strong hitting with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to cut the MSJ lead to 3-1.
  • MSJ immediately responded in the top half of the next frame to lead 4-1 and pulled away with a four-run seventh.
  • Junior Morgan Mack was able to bring home a run in the bottom of the final frame to put the final at 8-2.
  • This was the first meeting between the two programs.

Sophomore Sabrina Di Vito (1-1) tossed a shutout allowing only four hits against St. Vincent and had a base hit in the win.
Senior Ariana Schliepp had a multi-hit game against St. Vincent and drove in three runs for the day.
Sophomore Mackenzie Christofferson led the offense with three hits between the two games.
