Marian softball cruises past CUC to open NACC Tournament

Marian University softball (21-18, 15-9 NACC) kept its season alive with a convincing 8-0 win in five innings over Concordia Chicago.

  • The start for Marian was nearly perfect as Marian batted around in the bottom of the first and plated four runs.
  • A three-run double from senior Ariana Schliepp sparked the rally and opened the scoring for the game.
  • A single from senior Carissa Heisdorf shortly after put the Sabres up 4-0.
  • The Sabres were able to stay on it with a double from junior Mackenzie Christofferson in the second putting the Sabres ahead 5-0.
  • Junior Savanna Knuth pushed the lead to 6-0 in the third inning with her second home run of the season.
  • The Sabres were able to end the game early with two runs in the fifth.

  • Marian finished with a 12-3 advantage in hits for the game.
  • The Sabre defense didn’t commit an error, while CUC had two miscues leading to two unearned runs.
  • The Marian defense was also able to turn its 15th double play of the season.
  • The Cougars put multiple runners on in the first but could only manage one more runner for the rest of the game.
  • Marian wins the season series against CUC 2-1 and is now 26-16 all-time against the Cougars.
  • Marian is now 2-1 in opening round games at the NACC Tournament since the field expanded to eight.

Junior Sabrina Di Vito (9-8) allowed just three hits in her second shutout of the season.
Senior Sofia Cerullo reached safely in all three plate appearances going 2-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.
Senior Ariana Schliepp drove in three runs with a double in the first inning.
