Marian softball clinches NACC Tournament berth

Marian University softball (16-16, 13-7 NACC) swept Wisconsin Lutheran with 4-2 and 6-5 wins to clinch a NACC Tournament berth for the fourth consecutive season.

GAME 1 

  • Sommer Krull homered in the game’s first at-bat for Wisconsin Lutheran. 
  • Junior Sabrina Di Vito struck out three of the four batters she faced in the top of the third. 
  • After going hitless through two innings, the Sabres exploded for four runs in the third. Senior Ariana Schliepp capped the inning with a two-run homer. 
  • Junior Erin Cowe advanced to third in the fifth inning, but a Warriors double play erased the scoring chance. 
  • Wisconsin Lutheran scored in the seventh to make it a two-run game, but Di Vito’s strikeout sealed Marian’s 4-2 game 1 win. 

GAME 2 

  • Schliepp opened the scoring with a double that plated Cowe in the first inning. 
  • The Warriors responded with three runs over the next two innings, racking up five hits through three innings. They also added a triple at the top of the second.
  • Senior Sofia Cerullo added a triple of her own in the second inning but the Sabres were unable to drive in a run. 
  • Cowe crossed the plate in the third inning, coming on one of junior Mackenzie Christofferson’s three hits in the game. 
  • The Warriors took a 5-2 lead in the fourth on a two-run double by Krull. 
  • Marian battled back with four runs in the fourth, as Christofferson capped the inning with a two-run double to give the Sabres the lead.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran was held without a hit the rest of the way, securing Marian’s 6-5 win and a spot in the NACC Tournament.

  • Marian racked up 10 hits, including four in the third inning.
  • Eight different Sabres recorded hits. 
  • The Warriors committed one error, while the Sabres had none.
  • Di Vito pitched her fifth complete game of the season, a new career high.

GAME 2

  • The Sabres had a season-high 15 assists.  
  • Christofferson’s 12 putouts were the highest total by any Sabres player this season. 
  • Cowe scored three runs for Marian.
  • Marian led 13-7 in hits. 
  • The Sabres lead the all-time series 59-17 over the Warriors and have won nine straight.

Junior Erin Cowe was 3-for-6 with four runs scored.
Junior Mackenzie Christofferson was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in game two.
