Marian NCAA men’s hockey salvages split to finish first half

Marian University NCAA men’s ice hockey  (3-7-1, 2-6-0 NCHA) finished the first half of its season with a 3-1 win over Lake Forest.

  • Marian was able to get out to a fast start scoring a pair of goals in the first 4:29 of the game.
  • Junior Caden Carlson started the scoring with help from fellow juniors Nolan Flint and Hayden Tuba at the 3:54 mark.
  • Then just 35 seconds later, sophomore Eemil Rautio lit the lamp with assistance from sophomore Edison Weeks.
  • The 2-0 lead held going into the first intermission but Marian padded its lead 8:49 into the second period.
  • Sophomore Brendan Bottem found the back of the net on a power-play, assists to senior Noah Pickart and Rautio, to put Marian ahead 3-0.
  • The Foresters cut into the lead with 5:35 left as Marian took a 3-1 lead into the final period.
  • Neither team changed the scoreboard in the final 20 minutes to put the final at 3-1.

  • Shots favored LFC by a slim 33-30 margin.
  • The Sabres were able to dominate on face-offs with 32 wins to only 21 for the Foresters.
  • Each team had three power-play chances with Marian converting once for the lone power-play goal of the game.
  • The Sabres scored a power-play goal in each game of the series for the first time this season.
  • Defensively, Marian had 11 blocks, the second-most in a game this season.
  • Marian has now won five straight games at Lake Forest.

Sophomore Eemil Rautio finished off a four-point weekend with his second-straight multi-point game, third of the season.
Sophomore Tyler Fromolz finished with 24 saves in 47:28 of action.
Sophomore Brendan Bottem scored a goal to finish the first half on a six-game point streak.
