Marian NCAA men’s hockey reclaims Battle of Highway 41 trophy

Marian University NCAA men’s ice hockey  (5-12-2, 4-8-0 NCHA) reclaimed the Battle of Highway 41 trophy after a 3-2 overtime win over Lawrence.

  • The lone goal of the opening period went to Lawrence with the Vikings scoring at the 13:30 mark.
  • The Sabres evened the score 7:40 into the second period when senior Noah Pickart lit the lamp off of assists from freshman Owen Norman and sophomore Lucas Jeffreys.
  • The Vikings were able to retake the lead just 2:33 later at 2-1.
  • With just 1:41 left in the period, and short-handed, junior Cole Carlson was able to even the score with help from fellow junior Caden Carlson.
  • Neither team could find the back of the net in the third period leading to free hockey.
  • It took just one shot in overtime as Carlson, Co. scored the game-winner 31 seconds in with assists to Pickart and Carlson, Ca.

  • The Sabres also had a 34-20 edge for draws.
  • Each team had two power-play chances with neither team scoring on either opportunity.
