Marian NCAA men’s hockey pulls away from LFC in opener

Marian University men’s ice hockey (6-8-0, 3-4-0 NCHA) scored three times in the first 4:18 but fell to Augsburg 4-3 in overtime.

  • The opening period looked like it would scoreless before senior Daunte Fortner scored a power-play goal with just 1:04 on the clock.
  • Junior Noah Pickart and freshman Brandon Modde each assisted as Marian went into the first intermission ahead.
  • The Foresters found an equalizer at the 9:54 mark of the second but Marian went on to score four unanswered.
  • The stretch started with freshman Edison Weeks scoring with assists from Fortner and Pickart.
  • Marian opened the third period with two goals separated by 33 seconds in the first 3:21 of action.
  • Junior Alex Enegren opened it with assists to freshman Brendan Bottemand sophomore Caden Carlson.
  • Junior Luca Marcellitti then put Marian ahead 4-1 with assists from Fortner and fellow senior Jaymes Knee.
  • An empty-net goal from senior Matteo Pecchia iced the game with 2:21 to play, assists to Fortner and freshman Robert Pizzey.

  • Marian opened the game with a 17-8 advantage for shots in the first 20 minutes and held a 37-29 edge for the game.
  • The Sabres finished 1-for-7 (.143) on the power-play, while the Marian penalty kill held the Foresters scoreless on five chances.
  • Marian held a slim 36-32 edge for face-offs.
  • The Sabres are now 20-27-2 all-time against LFC with at least five goals in five of the last seven meetings.
