Marian University NCAA men’s ice hockey (3-7-2, 2-6-0 NCHA) began the second half with a 4-4 tie followed by a 2-1 shootout win over Concordia College.
- The Sabres had a slow start and trailed 2-0 with 2:51 left in the first.
- Freshman Brett Sabel got Marian on the board with 1:21 left in the period with assists from sophomore Dayne Tews and freshman Daxton Lang.
- Then just 54 seconds later, junior Caden Carlson tipped in a shot from sophomore Brady Brenner to tie the game 2-2 at the first intermission.
- Marian was able to take its first lead 4:40 into the second period when junior Nolan Flint lit the lamp with help from Carlson and freshman Andrew Politoski.
- The lead was built to two with just 2:38 on the clock when Brenner scored his first collegiate goal, assists to junior Cole Carlson and sophomore Eemil Rautio.
- The Cobbers were able to cut their deficit down to 4-3 going into the third after scoring with just 36.6 seconds later.
- The third period was scoreless until only 55.2 seconds remained on the scoreboard when Concordia forced overtime with an extra-attacker score.
- After a scoreless overtime, Marian was headed to overtime for the second time this season.
- Down to their final shooter and trailing 1-0, sophomore Brendan Bottem was able to keep the shootout going.
- A scoreless fourth round was followed by Carlson, Ca. netting the final goal to give Marian a 2-1 shootout win.
- Marian was outshot 32-23 in the game with the Sabres being limited to five shots in the first period and five shots between the third period and overtime.
- The Sabres finished with 38 wins in the circle to only 30 for the Cobbers.
- The Cobbers were 1-for-3 on the power play while Marian was held scoreless on two chances.
- Marian is now 1-0-2 in overtime games and 1-1 in shootouts this season.
- The Sabres are 5-5-2 all-time against Concordia and 3-1-1 at home.
