Marian University men’s volleyball (4-0, 0-0 NACC) earned a pair of four-set victories defeating Westminster and Calvin to open the Sabre Classic.
MARIAN VS. WESTMINSTER (W – 25-14, 17-25, 25-23, 25-19)
- Marian dominated the opening set jumping out o a fast 9-2 lead.
- The Sabres led by as much as 11 en route to an easy victory.
- Marian opened the second set with a 13-9 lead, but Westminster responded with a 10-1 run to lead by five and eventually took the set.
- The Blue Jays scored the first four points of the third and led 8-5.
- Marian then used a 12-5 spurt to build a 17-13 lead.
- Westminster had an answer tying the set at 19-19 but a quick 4-1 run from Marian led the Sabres to a win.
- Marian opened the fourth with a 9-5 advantage drawing a Westminster timeout.
- The Blue Jays cut their deficit down to one but Marian immediately used an 8-2 run to lead 21-14.
- Westminster showed fight cutting that deficit down to three at 21-18, but Marian was able to score four of the final five points to secure the win.
MARIAN VS. CALVIN (25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 25-16)
- Calvin had a strong start leading early 8-4.
- Marian chipped away at the deficit and a 5-1 spurt later in the set saw Marian take a 19-16 advantage.
- The Knights only trailed 22-20 before Marian scored three of the final four points to take the opener.
- After back-and-forth play started the second set, Marian was able to go on an 8-2 run to lead 14-7.
- That run proved to be the difference as Marian built a 2-0 lead.
- The third set opened 7-7 before Calvin scored five straight to lead 12-7.
- Marian was able to cut that deficit down to as little as three but the Knights would force a fourth set.
- A strong start for the Sabres saw Marian lead 5-1 only for Calvin to rally to only trail 7-6.
- Marian led 9-7 before going on a 10-3 run to build a 19-10 advantage.
- From there Marian was able to cruise to the victory.
VS. WESTMINSTER
- Marian finished with a 42-36 edge in kills and 51-36 advantage for digs.
- The Sabres hit .155 while the Marian defense limited Westminster to .065 hitting.
- From the service line Marian had six aces to only two for the Blue Jays.
- This was the first meeting between the two schools.
VS. CALVIN
- Marian had a 50-38 edge in kills and 58-41 advantage for digs.
- The Sabres were able to finish with a .208 hitting percentage and hit a combined .285 in the first two sets.
- Marian had double-digit kills in all four sets.
- Marian is now 2-0 all-time against Calvin.

Senior Derek Wills had a double-double against Calvin recording 21 kills with 10 digs.

Senior Isaac Dreifuerst had a match-high 13 kills in the win over Westminster.

Freshman Giancarlo Bou had a double-double against Westminster going for 13 assists and a team-high 11 digs. He then had 21 assists and seven digs against the Knights
