Marian men’s volleyball splits with UW-Stevens Point and Loras

Marian University men’s volleyball (11-4, 2-1 NACC) sweeps UW-Stevens Point but fell to #5 ranked Loras at the Marian Triangular.

MARIAN VS. UW-STEVENS POINT / 25-19, 25-23, 25-21.

  • Set one of the day saw the Pointers get out to an early lead behind a 6-3 run. 
  • Marian was able to answer with a 7-0 run of its own followed up with a 3-1 advantage taking the score to 13-7.
  • The Pointers would crawl back into the first set with a 6-3 advantage. 
  • The two teams would go on to trade points with an even 4-4 run before the Sabres used a 3-0 advantage to take a five point lead. 
  • Marian would close out set one behind a kill and block by Keanu Ouranitsas-Hayes
  • Set two saw the Sabres get out to the early lead behind a 7-4 run before the Pointers would take its first lead of the set with a 4-0 run. 
  • A 5-3 run by the Pointers took the score to 12-10 but a 4-2 run by Marian brought the score even once again. 
  • UW-Stevens Point would hold the slim 7-6 advantage taking the score to 21-20 but the Sabres were able to close out the set with a 5-2 advantage.
  • The two teams would trade points to open set three with Marian holding the 5-4 advantage before using a 3-1 run to extend its lead. 
  • The Pointers were able to answer with a 5-0 run before the Sabres responded with a 6-2 run to regain the lead 14-12. 
  • An even 5-5 run pushed the score to 19-17 but the Sabres would control the remainder of the set and take the match with a 6-4 run. 

MARIAN VS. LORAS / 25-18, 25-20, 25-23

  • Loras was able to get out to a early set one lead on a 7-3 run. 
  • The two teams would trade points with an even 5-5 run before the Duhawks would use a 6-3 run to extend its lead to seven at 17-10.
  • Marian kept things competitive for the remainder of set one with an even 8-8 run but the Duhawk lead proved insurmountable.
  • Set two saw the Sabres get out to the early 4-1 lead and would extend its lead to four behind a slim 6-5 run. 
  • The Duhawks would crawl back into the match tying things up 14-14 with a 8-5 run. 
  • A 5-4 run gave Loras its first lead of set two and would hold onto that lead the remainder of the set with a 6-2 advantage. 
  • The two teams opened set three trading points with six lead changes and the Sabres leading 11-9.
  • Loras would tie things back up 15-15 with a slight 6-5 advantage.
  • A competitive set three continued with an even 5-5 run to bring the score to 20-20. 
  • Loras would close out set three and the match behind a 5-3 run.

MARIAN VS. UW-STEVENS POINT

  • Marian dominated on offense with the 45-31 advantage in kills and 43-25 advantage in assists.
  • The Sabres recorded a season-high blocks with 10 and held the Pointers to .065 hitting. 
  • The backrow continues to shine for Marian as the Sabres held the 47-41 advantage in digs. 

MARIAN VS. LORAS

  • The Sabres held the advantage in both blocks 5-2 and aces 6-3. 
  • Marian had a solid .263 hitting percentage with only nine attacking errors but the Duhawks were more efficient hitting .398.
  • Loras held the advantage in digs 40-23 and assists 48-30. .

Senior Derek Wills lead the Sabre offense with 27 kills on the day while also totaling four blocks. 
Junior Keanu Ouranitsas-Hayes had a dominant day at the net with nine total blocks and six coming against UW-Stevens Point.  
Senior Nick Stasch paced the Sabre offense with 67 total assists while adding 17 digs posting a double-double against the Pointers.
