Marian men’s volleyball splits on day one of Lions Invitational

Marian University men’s volleyball (7-2, 0-0 NACC) opened up the Lions Invitational with a loss to Loras 25-13, 25-22, 25-11, but bounced back with a sweep over Hilbert 25-15, 25-15, 25-12.

MARIAN VS. LORAS / 25-13, 25-22, 25-11.

  • Loras came out of the gates quick with a 5-0 run to start set one. 
  • Marian answered with a slim 6-5 advantage but the Duhawks extended its lead with a 5-1 run. 
  • Marian was not able to get much going in set one with Loras closing out the set behind a 10-5 run. 
  • Set two saw the Sabres jump out to the early 5-3 lead and would push its lead to three at 7-4.
  • The Duhawks would tie things up 8-8 but the Sabres used a 3-1 run to regain the lead. 
  • A competitve set saw the two teams trading points with Loras holding the slight 6-5 advantage to once again tie things up 15-15. 
  • A 5-3 run by the Duhawks would push the score to 20-18 before the Sabres would bring the score even but the Duhawks used a 5-2 run to take set two. 
  • Loras once again got out to a quick 5-1 lead before extending the Duhawk lead to six at 8-2.
  • The third set was all Loras as the Sabres were never able to gain traction from a competitive second set. 
  • Loras used a 10-4 run to extend its lead to 12 at 18-6.
  • The Duhawks closed out set three and the match with a 7-5 advantage. 

MARIAN VS. HILBERT / 25-15, 25-15, 25-12

  • Marian jumped out to a 5-2 lead and would extend its early lead in set one to five at 10-5. 
  • The Sabres then used a slight 5-4 advantage followed by a 6-3 run to extend its lead to eight at 20-12.
  • The two teams would trade points at the end of set one but the Sabre lead proved to be too much for Hilbert to overcome. 
  • Set two saw the two teams tied 3-3 but the Sabres used a 5-1 run to take the 8-4 lead.
  • Marian then used a 8-5 run to extend its lead 16-9.
  • A Sabre 4-1 run was followed up by a Hilbert 4-0 run to bring the score within five. 
  • Marian was dominant down the stretch in set two with a 5-0 run to close the lead and prevent any hopes of a Hilbert comeback.
  • Set three opened in similar fashion as set two with the two teams tied 4-4 before Marian would go on a 6-0 run.
  • Hilbert held a slight 6-5 advtange before the Sabres used another 6-0 run to extend its lead to 10 at 20-10. 
  • Marian would close out set three and the match on a 5-2 run.

MARIAN VS. LORAS

  • The two defenses played well with Loras holding the slight 6-5 advantage in blocks and a 30-21 advantage in digs. 
  • The service line was a strength for the Duhawks with a strong 7-1 advantage in aces.
  • Marian was held to .000 hitting percentage for only the first time on the young season. 

MARIAN VS. HILBERT

  • The Sabres bounced back against Hilbert dominating in every statistical category.
  • Marian held Hilbert’s offense to .107 hitting while holding the dominant 41-18 advantage in kills. 
  • The service line was a weapon for the Sabres with Marian holding the 9-0 advantage in aces. 
  • At the net the Sabres held the 3-1 advantage in blocks while out digging Hilbert 33-22.

Senior Cam Muller led the Sabre offense with 13 kills between both sets with eight coming against Hilbert.
Senior Aaron Velasco dominated the match against Hilbert recording a match-high 12 kills on .308 hitting while adding four aces.
Junior Isaac Dreifuerst recorded 13 kills between both sets while adding three aces and two blocks on the day.
