Marian men’s volleyball falls to Aurora in five-set thriller

Marian University men’s volleyball (15-8, 6-5 NACC) forced Aurora to five sets but fell just short of a reverse sweep 25-20, 25-21, 26-28, 21-25, 15-8.

  • Set one saw Aurora get out on a quick 6-2 run before an 8-3 run by the Sabres gave Marian its first lead 10-9.
  • The two teams would trade points on a short 2-2 run before the Spartans used a 5-0 run to push its lead to four.
  • Marian was able to tie things up once again with a 4-0 run but Aurora answered with a 6-2 run of its own to force a Sabre timeout. 
  • The four point Spartan lead proved to be enough as an even 3-3 run as Aurora prevailed in set one. 
  • Set two opened with back-and-forth play as the teams were tied 5-5 before the Sabres used a 5-2 to take a three point lead. 
  • Aurora was able to tie things up at 11-11 and 12-12 but a 5-3 run pushed the Sabre lead to two.  
  • The Spartans hung around and used a 6-2 run to take a late lead. 
  • Aurora finished set two on a 4-2 run to go up two sets to none. 
  • Set three opened with a similar script as the competitive play continued. 
  • The Sabres held a 6-4 advantage to go up 10-8 before Aurora tied things up 10-10. 
  • A 3-0 Sabre run was answered by a 4-2 run by Aurora.
  • Neither team could pull ahead as both teams were neck and neck with Aurora holding the slim 23-21 lead.  
  • Marian fought back and tied things up 23-23 and would close out set three with a 5-3 advantage to force a fourth set.
  • The two teams opened up set four trading points with Aurora holding the 10-8 advantage. 
  • Aurora extended its lead to four at 15-11 but Marian crawled back into the set to tie things up 16-16.
  • The Sabres used a dominant 6-1 run to take a five point lead and force a Spartan timeout.
  • A 4-1 run by the Spartans was shut down after Marian scored the final two points to force a fifth set.
  • Aurora came out in set five on a 5-0 run before Marian was able to cut the Spartan lead to two at 6-4. 
  • The Sabres could not gain any traction in set five as Aurora closed out set five and the match on a 7-4 run.

  • The Sabre offense had a strong day holding the advantage in kills 62-56 and assists 61-50.
  • Aurora held the advantage in blocks 12-8 but the Sabre back row was strong and held the 58-55 advantage.
  • Marian recorded five service aces to the Spartans four.
  • Marian will look to finish off the regular season on a high-note Saturday against Concordia Chicago.

Senior Derek Wills recorded a career-high 25 kills on .322 hitting while adding 14 digs. 
Junior Keanu Ouranitsas-Hayes reached double-digit kills for the third time this season with 11 kills on .625 hitting.
Senior Nick Stasch also set a new career-high after recording 54 assists while adding six digs.
