Marian men’s volleyball earns dramatic win over Illinois Tech

Marian University men’s volleyball (11-12, 4-4 NACC) defeated Illinois Tech in five sets in its first home match in 17 days; 25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 18-16.

  • The Sabres spotted Illinois Tech the first six points of the match but bounced back after a timeout.
  • Marian managed to cut their deficit down to 14-13 before scoring the next 10 points to lead by nine.
  • Illinois Tech outscored Marian the rest of the way but the Sabres took a 1-0 advantage.
  • A 6-1 spurt from the Sabres put Marian ahead 13-9 to start the second.
  • The Scarlet Hawks were able to chip away at the deficit and managed to only trail 20-19.
  • Illinois Tech completed the comeback with a 6-1 spurt that included scoring the final four points.
  • A back-and-forth third set saw Marian hold a 16-12 advantage, the largest lead for the set.
  • The Sabres led the rest of the way but Illinois Tech was able to fight off two set-point chances before a kill from senior Isaac Dreifuerst put Marian ahead 2-1.
  • Illinois Tech had a stretch of four straight points and three straight points to lead 23-17 in the fourth set.
  • Marian put up a valiant rally with a 5-1 run but was unable to prevent a fifth set.
  • After spotting Illinois Tech the first three points, Marian rallied and the fifth was tied at 6-6.
  • Marian then went on a 5-1 run to lead 11-7 and brought that lead out to 14-11.
  • Illinois Tech was able to fight off five match-point opportunities before Dreifuerst put the match away with a kill.

  • The Scarlet Hawks had an edge at the net 10-4 for blocks.
  • The Sabres improve to 10-2 in home matches and 3-2 in matches that go five sets.

Senior Isaac Dreifuerst had a match-high 18 kills to go with three service aces.
Senior Aaron Velasco posted a double-double recording a match-high 22 digs to go with 16 kills off of a .538 hitting percentage.
Freshman Giancarlo Bou had a career-high 43 assists to go with a career-high 13 digs.
