Marian men’s volleyball dominates Fontbonne in three sets

Marian University men’s volleyball (5-1, 0-0 NACC) sweeps Fontbonne 25-16, 25-13, and 25-20.

  • Marian opened up set one with a quick 4-1 run before the Griffins were able to tie things up 5-5.  
  • The Sabres then used a 5-1 run to take the score to 10-6 and the Sabres followed that up with a strong 6-3 run to extend the Sabre lead to seven.
  • The Griffins answered with a 7-5 run but the Sabres did not let Fontbonne gain any momentum and would close out set one on a 4-0 run.
  • Set two saw a similar script with the Sabres jumping out to a 7-2 lead.
  • Marian used the momentum to extend its lead by six with a 6-3 run.
  • The two teams would trade the next few points before the Sabres used a dominating 8-2 run to close out set two.
  • Both teams came out swinging in the third set with the teams trading points but the Griffins holding the slight 6-5 advantage.
  • The lead changes continued with the teams tied at 14-14 before the Sabres would force a Fontbonne timeout with a 5-0 run. 
  • The two teams would trade points to close out the match but the Sabre lead proved insurmountable.

  • A stout Sabre defense forced 28 Fontbonne hitting errors and held them to -.047 hitting on the night.
  • The service line was a strength for Marian as the Sabres held the 4-1 advantage in aces. 
  • Marian recorded double digit kills in two of the three sets with a total hitting percentage of .267.

Senior Derek Wills led the Sabre offense with 11 kills and has now recorded double digit kills in five of the teams six matches this season.
Senior Marc Rey had a strong night from the front row leading the team in blocks with three while adding six kills on .400 hitting.
Senior Nick Stasch recorded 26 assists and paced the Sabre back row with a team high seven digs.
