Marian men’s volleyball defeats MSOE in five-set thriller

Marian University men’s volleyball (10-3, 2-1 NACC) defeated MSOE in a five-set thriller 25-27, 25-16, 29-27, 20-25, and 15-12.

  • Marian was able to build an early lead of 10-6 and led for most of the opening set.
  • MSOE was able to hang around, however, and the set was eventually at a 21-21 dead lock.
  • Marian would score three of the next four points to earn a set-point opportunity at 24-22.
  • The Raiders fought off the pair of set-point chances with three straight to lead 25-24.
  • Marian was able to return serve and fend off the first chance for MSOE to end the set but not the second as MSOE earned a 27-25 win.
  • The second set had a similar start with Marian leading 10-6.
  • The Raiders cut that deficit down to 14-12 before the Sabres used a 7-2 run to build a 22-14 lead.
  • The Sabres eventually evened the sets scoring three of the final four points with the final settling at 25-16.
  • MSOE responded to open the third taking an early 11-4 advantage that was capped by five straight points.
  • The Raiders would lead 23-18 and had three set-point chances with a 24-21 lead.
  • Marian would score four straight points to push the set into extras, as part of a 7-1 run and led 25-24.
  • MSOE fended off three set-point chances for the Sabres but a service ace from junior Trent Goo Sun capped a 29-27 win for the Sabres.
  • The Raiders started set four with a 10-9 lead and then went on a 7-3 run to build a 17-12 advantage.
  • Marian cut that deficit down to three but MSOE would use a 5-1 run later in the set to force a fifth.
  • After a 3-2 MSOE lead opened the fifth, Marian scored four unanswered points, and led for the remainder of the set.
  • The Raiders would trail by one on three occasions but Marian would end the match scoring three of the final four points.

  • MSOE had a 63-59 advantage in kills and 58-57 edge in digs.
  • The Sabres hit more efficiently at a .212 clip with the Sabre defense holding MSOE to just a .074 hitting percentage in the three sets Marian won.
  • Marian had an impressive 94 percent side-out percentage in the second set.
  • The Sabres have now won three of the last five meetings with MSOE.

Senior Aaron Velasco had a match-high 24 kills and 13 digs as part of his fourth double-double of the season. 
Senior Derek Wills posted his sixth double-double this campaign after recording 14 kills with a match-high 13 digs.
Senior Nick Stasch eclipsed 40 assists for the third time this season finishing with 43 and had a pair of assisted blocks.
