Marian men’s volleyball defeats Edgewood in defensive battle

Marian University men’s volleyball (12-3, 3-1 NACC) defeated Edgewood in four sets with a strong defensive performance 25-19, 25-22, 20-25, and 25-21.

  • Marian got out to a quick start in set one with a 4-1 run. 
  • The two teams would trade points with an even 6-6 split to make it 10-7 before the Sabres pushed its lead to five with a 3-1 run. 
  • The Eagles hung around by bringing it within one with a 4-0 run before the Sabres rattled off three straight. 
  • Marian pushed its lead back out to five with a 4-3 run to take the score to 20-15 before the Sabres would close out set one with a 5-3 advantage. 
  • The Sabres were once again able to get out to a 4-1 lead to open set two.
  • Marian used a dominant 9-3 run to take an eight point lead.
  • Edgewood was able to rattle off four straight points to bring it within four at 13-9. 
  • The two teams would trade points on an even 6-6 run pushing set two to 19-15. 
  • Edgewood held a slim 4-3 advantage but the Sabre lead proved insurmountable even with an even 3-3 run. 
  • For the third straight set the Sabres got out to a 4-1 start but the Eagles answered with a 6-4 advantage. 
  • Edgewood brought the score even 10-10 and would take its first lead of the night 12-10. 
  • Marian used a slight 6-5 run to bring set three within one 17-16.
  • The two teams would trade points on an even 3-3 run but it was the Eagles who would prevail in set three with a 5-1 advantage to force a fourth set. 
  • The two teams would open set four on an even 5-5 run before a 4-2 run by the Sabres pushed its lead to two. 
  • The Eagles would tie things back up 9-9 but the Sabres would use a 7-2 run to take its largest lead of the set. 
  • Edgewood kept things close holding a 5-3 advantage to bring the score to 20-17. 
  • The Sabres would close out set four and the match with a slim 5-4 advantage.

  • Edgewood had a 46-42 advantage in kills but Marian was able to force 27 Eagle hitting errors. 
  • The two teams were competitive on defense with an even 48-48 split in digs and 9-9 split in blocks. 
  • Marian held the advantage in hitting percentage .196-.143.

Senior Derek Wills recorded a game-high 18 kills at an extremely effective rate hitting .450.
Senior Cam Muller ended the night with nine kills on .227 hitting with one ace and four digs. 
Senior Nick Stasch had 32 assists and was one dig away from a double-double with nine.
