Marian men’s volleyball cinches spot in NACC Tournament

Marian University men’s volleyball (13-14, 6-6 NACC) clinched a spot in the NACC Tournament with a four-set win over Concordia Chicago; 25-20, 20-25, 27-25, 25-23.

  • The Sabres opened with a slim 7-6 lead before going on a 6-2 run to build a five-point advantage.
  • Concordia Chicago was able to trim the deficit down to two but a 5-1 run put the Sabres ahead 23-16 to eventually take the set.
  • The Cougars had a quick start but the two squads eventually were tied at 17-17.
  • Concordia Chicago was then able to go on a 5-1 run to lead by four and eventually evened the sets.
  • The third set started tight as well with a 15-15 stalemate.
  • The Cougars scored four straight points to lead by four and took its advantage out to 24-21.
  • Marian was able to fight off four set-point chances for CUC before a kill from senior Derek Wills gave Marian a 2-1 advantage.
  • The fourth set opened with an 8-5 lead for CUC.
  • The Sabres were able to rally going on an 11-3 run to lead 16-11.
  • A 5-1 run from Marian later in the set put the Sabres ahead 24-17.
  • The Cougars made things interesting with six straight points but Marian was able to clinch the victory with a kill from senior Keanu Ouranitsas-Hayes.

  • Marian finishes the regular season 12-2 at home.
  • Each team had 11 blocks at the net.
  • The Sabres benefited from 20 service aces from Concordia Chicago.
  • Marian improves to 7-1 all-time against CUC with five straight wins.
  • Marian clinches a spot in the NACC Tournament with the win and will travel Tuesday, April 8 for the quarterfinals.  Their opponent will be determined based on results from Saturday, April 5.

Senior Isaac Dreifuerst nearly had a double-double recording 12 kills to go with nine digs and four total blocks.
Senior Aaron Velasco posted a match-high 17 digs.
