Marian men’s soccer outlasts Ripon in Highway 23 Derby thriller

Marian University men’s soccer (1-0-1, 0-0-0 NACC) won a thriller over Ripon 2-1 to take the Highway 23 Derby and win their first game of the season. .

  • Junior Zac Pfister opened the game up for the Sabres, scoring a goal assisted by sophomore Brayden Johnson at the 13:00 mark. 
  • Ripon quickly responded with a Seth Schroeder goal at 15:25 to tie it at 1-1. 
  • Junior Tyler Hall saved the penalty kick from the Red Hawk’s Finley Manning near the end of the first, taking a 1-1 score into halftime. 
  • Following two Ripon yellow cards, sophomore Jay Wolcott was able to capitalize with a goal at 70:57. 
  • Coming down to the wire, Marian was able to hold off Ripon’s final shot attempts and come away with the victory.

  • The shot distribution was fairly even, seeing Ripon hold a slight 12-11 advantage in shots, while Marian led 5-4 in shots on goal. 
  • Marian held a noticeable 17-8 lead in fouls. 
  • Each team was evened up with three saves each. 
  • Marian is 9-5 all-time against the Red Hawks and now tie the Highway 23 Derby series at 1-1, following last year’s 0-3 defeat at Ripon. 
  • Marian has won five of their last six match-ups with Ripon, dating back to 2017.

Sophomore Jay Wolcott registered the game-deciding goal in the second half; already equaling the goal total from his freshman season.
Junior Tyler Hall (1-0-1) had two saves, including a huge save in the second half off a Ripon penalty kick.
Junior Zac Pfister scored his first goal as a Sabre to open up the scoring for Marian.
