Marian men’s soccer flashes potential in season-opening tie

Marian University men’s soccer (0-0-1, 0-0-0 NACC) fought for 90 minutes, ultimately tying Carthage 0-0 in its season opener.

  • Carthage came out with the first three shots of the game, before sophomore Jay Wolcott’s shot attempt at 15:17. 
  • It was a defensive-minded first half with both teams knotted up at 0-0 going into halftime.
  • The second half started similarly; three early shots from Carthage before a Wolcott attempt, followed by a shot from junior Zac Pfister two-minutes later. 
  • Sophomore Brayden Johnson had some promising shot attempts in the second half, with his second shot being just right. 
  • The Sabres stood tall on defense and held a pesky Firebirds team scoreless through 90 minutes.

  • Marian ended with a 13-11 edge in shots, with 7 of those coming in the second half. 
  • Marian committed 15 fouls to 11 for Carthage, while Marian had two yellow cards to Carthage’s three. 
  • The Sabres start the season with a non-losing record for the second straight year, following last year’s 3-0 victory over Manchester (Ind.).
  • This was only the third time Carthage has been held scoreless in a game since the start of the 2024 season. 
  • Marian is now 0-2-1 all-time against the Firebirds with their last meeting dating back to 2010.

Junior Tyler Hall (0-0-1) contained all three shots he faced, leading to the shutout. 
Sophomore Jay Wolcott stayed active late, attempting two of his three shots in the second half.
