Marian men’s basketball wins thriller against Benedictine

Marian University men’s basketball (13-3, 6-3 NACC) used a late triple from senior Mahlik Hall to defeat Benedictine 71-69.

  • After a small lead of 6-5 favored Benedictine, Marian took the first sizeable lead of the game with a 15-4 spurt.
  • This proved to be the largest lead for either side as the Eagles immediately scored eight straight points.
  • The Sabres were able to build its lead back up to as high as six, but Benedictine used a quick 7-1 run to lead 32-30 at the break.
  • Marian opened the second half with a 13-4 run to lead by seven with 14:25 on the clock.
  • The Eagles chipped away at its deficit but Marian was able to lead for most of the remainder of the half.
  • Benedictine managed to retake the lead late in the second half, however, and led 69-68 with 42 seconds on the clock.
  • The next possession Hall was able to hit a triple, assist to junior Brandon Adorno, that put Marian ahead 71-69.
  • A late three-pointer with one second left from the Eagles was offline and led Marian to a season sweep of Benedictine.

  • Marian shot 22-of-53 (.415) for the game and 10-of-29 (.345) on three-pointers.
  • Benedictine was 21-of-55 (.382) and 5-of-22 (.227) on triples.
  • The Eagles were able to stay in the game going 22-of-26 (.846) from the charity stripe.
  • Marian only turned the ball over seven times but the Eagles were able to outscore the Sabres 10-4 in points off turnovers.
  • The Sabres are now 6-0 on the season in games decided by five or fewer points or that needed overtime.
  • This is the first time since the 2013-14 season that Marian has defeated Benedictine twice.
  • Marian is now 9-22 all-time against Benedictine.

Junior Brandon Adorno had a team-high 15 points to go with five assists.
Junioro Trey Jenkins had 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Senior Mahlik Hall chipped in 11 points including teh game-winning triple.
