Marian men’s basketball takes MSOE to overtime in hard-fought loss

Senior Derek Lindert and junior Rashawn Bost each knocked down five three-pointers, helping Marian University men’s basketball (8-8, 5-5 NACC) push MSOE to overtime before  falling to the Raiders, 85-81.

  • MSOE jumped out to an aggressive 15-5 lead before Marian stormed back to make it 17-15 with 10 minutes left in the first half. 
  • Junior Rashawn Bost checked in midway through the first half and quickly caught fire, drilling his first four three-point attempts. 
  • Senior Jazz Orozco converted a layup off a pass from junior Andrew Ayeni to gave Marian a 26-24 lead with 3:55 remaining in the half.
  • Back-to-back buckets by senior Derek Lindert capped a 10-2 Marian run and gave the Sabres their biggest lead of the game at eight. 
  • Marian took a 34-30 lead into halftime, led by Bost’s 15 points and five first-half assists from Ayeni. 
  • Lindert continued his strong start, hitting two consecutive threes to open the second half. 
  • After the Raiders went on a 14-4 run to take a six-point lead, junior Keshawn Cotton scored on an up-and-under and-one layup midway through the half. 
  • Ayeni took over for the Sabres, scoring 12 straight Marian points to put his team back in front. 
  • Led by the NACC’s second-leading scorer Mason Dopirak, the Raiders started draining deep three-pointers to keep MSOE alive. 
  • Ayeni converted an and-one off a generous roll, and freshman Marvin Haslett followed with a double-clutch layup to keep Marian within four with 3:30 remaining. 
  • Senior Alex Vassilakis fouled out with just over three minutes remaining. 
  • Ayeni’s layup cut the deficit to three with 1:26 remaining. 
  • Two possessions later, Lindert rose up for a game-tying three for 43 second left.
  • MSOE’s full-court heave was off, sending the game into overtime. 
  • Just 12 seconds into overtime, Ayeni fouled out, becoming the second Sabre forced to the bench.
  • A floater from Haslett knotted the game at 77-77 with 3:44 left. 
  • The Raiders extended the lead to four before junior Fredrick Ware Jr. cut it to 81-79 with a mid-range jumper. 
  • With a chance to tie, Haslett’s layup fell short with 20 seconds left, and MSOE iced the game by sinking two free throws at the line.

  • Marian shot a season-high 69 field goal attempts and 35 three-point attempts, going 27-of-69 (.391) from the field and 12-of-35 (.343) from three. 
  • Ayeni added his sixth 20-point game of the season, after totaling just two 20-point performances for the Sabres last year. 
  • Today marked the Sabres’ first overtime game of the season; their last also came against MSOE, a 75-84 loss on Feb. 19, 2025. 
  • MSOE senior Mason Dopirak, who is averaging 24.8 points per game this season, poured in 28 on the night, with 18 coming in the second half and overtime. 
  • Marian began 4-1 in the NACC, but has lost four of their last five, falling to 5-5 in conference play.
  • The Sabres and Raiders met for the 72nd time today, with Marian holding a 45-27 advantage in the all-time series. 
  • Marian has lost four in a row and five of their last six matchups against MSOE.
