Marian men’s basketball rallies late to defeat Eagles

Marian University men’s basketball (3-3, 1-1 NACC) earned its first conference win of the season with a 73-64 victory over Edgewood.

  • Freshman Marvin Haslett opened the scoring for the Sabres with the first four points.
  • A three-pointer from senior Derek Lindert extended the Sabres’ lead to ten early in the first half. 
  • The Eagles quickly cut the deficit to three before an and-one layup from junior Andrew Ayeni halted the 7-0 run. 
  • A jumper by Edgewood’s Avery Houden beat the buzzer, and Marian took a 37-35 lead into halftime. 
  • The Sabres and Eagles traded leads during the first five minutes of the second half before a 10-0 run gave Marian some breathing room. 
  • Edgewood responded with an 11-4 run to take a 57-56 lead with 8:55 remaining in the second half. 
  • The Sabres shot 12 free throws in the final three and a half minutes, making nine to seal a 73-64 win.

  • Marian held Edgewood to 9-for-29 (.310) shooting in the second half after the Eagles shot 15-for-29 (.517) in the first. 
  • The Sabres pushed the pace, outscoring Edgewood 15-3 in fast break points. 
  • Marian also controlled points in the paint, holding a 40-26 advantage. 
  • Marian made a season-high 19 of 26 free throws. Ayeni led the way, going 8-for-12 (.667) from the line. 
  • Today’s win snapped a four-game NACC losing streak for the Sabres, who had dropped three straight conference games to end the 2024-25 season. 
  • It was the 75th all-time meeting between the Sabres and Eagles, with Edgewood holding a 41-34 series lead.

Senior Alex Vassilakis recorded a near double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. 
Freshman Marvin Haslett capitalized on his first start, scoring 13 points, his highest total as a Sabre.
