Marian men’s basketball drops back-and-forth affair with Augsburg

Senior Alex Vassilakis grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, but Marian University men’s basketball (1-2, 0-0 NACC) lost a neutral-site barn burner with Augsburg, 70-66.

  • The Sabres started out hot, connecting on five of their first eight attempts to take an early 11-2 lead. 
  • Marian extended the lead to double figures following a jumper from senior Derek Lindert at 13:00.
  • After switching to a zone defense, Augsburg was able to find some life. The Auggies slowly chipped at the deficit, eventually taking their first lead off a three-pointer at 2:18.
  • The Sabres quickly responded with a three of their own by senior Alex Vassilakis, who finished with 11 points and five rebounds at the half.
  • Marian went into the break up three, 33-30.
  • Lindert opened the second half by scoring the first five Sabre points, but saw their lead slip away after three scoreless minutes.
  • A fastbreak steal-and-score from senior Jazz Orozco helped the Sabres recapture the lead, but it was short-lived.
