Marian men’s basketball defeats UW-Superior in season opener

Marian University men’s basketball (1-0, 0-0 NACC) earned a 61-53 road victory against UW-Superior to open its season.

  • The opening minutes saw UWS take an early 8-5 lead but Marian responded with a 16-4 run that saw the Sabres lead 21-9 with 7:03 to play in the first.
  • The Yellowjackets had an answer cutting the Sabre lead down to two with 2:24 left in the half.
  • A strong finish to the half for Marian saw the Sabres take a 32-22 lead into the break after scoring eight unanswered points.
  • Marian maintained its double-digit lead for most of the second half, but UWS cut its deficit down to 45-39 with 6:02 on the clock.
  • A quick 8-1 spurt helped the Sabres pull away for good and six points proved to be the closest UWS would get to Marian in the second half.

  • Marian was 12-for-27 (.444) from the field in the first half and finished the game 20-of-55 (.364) and 5-of-21 (.238) from beyond the arc.
  • The Sabre defense limited UWS to 16-of-44 (.364) shooting and 2-of-16 (.125) on three-pointers.
  • The Yellowjackets were also just 19-of-32 (.594) at the charity stripe.
  • Marian grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and outscored UWS 15-5 in second-chance points.
  • The Sabres are now 2-3 all-time against UW-Superior.

Junior Brandon Adorno had a team-high 18 points and had two assists.
Junior Alex Vassilakis nearly had a double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds and eight points.
Junior Trey Jenkins provided 12 points off the bench.
