Marian men’s basketball defeats BenU to tie program record win streak

Marian University men’s basketball (8-0, 2-0 NACC) tied a program record with its ninth straight win, extending back to last season, in a 76-67 win over Benedictine.

  • Marian had a strong start scoring the first seven points, but most of the first half was a one-possession game.
  • The Sabres led 11-6 before a 7-1 run from Benedictine saw the Eagles lead 13-12.
  • The two squads eventually saw themselves knotted at 25-25 with Benedictine scoring four of the next seven points to take a one-point lead into halftime.
  • Another strong start saw the Sabres score the first six points of the second half to take a 34-29 lead and force a Benedictine timeout.
  • The Eagles were able to bounce back and tie the game at 36-36.
  • Marian responded a 16-2 spurt saw the Sabres pull ahead 52-38 and draw another Eagle stoppage with 13:35 to play.
  • The Eagles had an answer with six unanswered point to trim its deficit to eight.
  • A Sabre timeout helped stall any momentum and Marian quickly brought its lead back out to double-digits with a 58-46 lead and 9:35 on the clock.
  • Marian continued to lead comfortable at 68-57 with 4:49 left before Benedictine scored six straight points to only trail 68-63 and 2:26 to play.
  • A clutch triple from senior Eli Vogel in the next possession ended the run and put Marian back out in front by eight.
  • The Sabres went in to the final 1:01 ahead 71-65 and went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to seal the 76-67 win.

  • Marian shot 29-of-48 (.604) and 4-of-11 (.364) from beyond the arc.
  • The Eagles were 24-of-52 (.462) and just 3-of-18 (.167) on three-point attempts.
  • The Sabres went 18-of-28 (.643) shooting in the second half.
  • Marian won the battle in the paint by a 46-32 margin with 30 of those points coming in the second half.
  • Each team had 19 turnovers with the Sabres outscoring Benedictine 22-16 in points off turnovers.
  • This is the third time Marian has won nine straight games, dating back to last season, tying such win streaks from 2014 and 2002.
  • Marian is now 8-22 all-time against Benedictine and 6-7 all-time against the Eagles in Sadoff Gym.

Junior Brandon Adorno finished with a team-high 18 points and had two assists.
Senior Mahlik Hall was 6-of-7 (.857) off the bench to score 16 points, and he grabbed five rebounds.
Sophomore Andrew Ayeni chipped in 14 points to go with three steals and a block defensively.
