Marian men’s basketball continues hot start defeating Lawrence

Marian University men’s basketball (5-0, 0-0 NACC) earned a 67-62 victory at home against Lawrence.

  • The largest lead in the opening half was only five points after Marian scored a quick seven unanswered points to lead 26-21 with 6:13 left in the half.
  • The two squads traded the lead back and forth the remainder of the half with a layup from junior Alex Vassilakis putting Marian ahead 34-33 heading into halftime.
  • Lawrence scored the opening basket of the second half but from there Marian went on a 14-3 spurt to take a 48-38 advantage and force an LU timeout with 12:57 to play.
  • The Vikings chipped away at their deficit with a 12-5 run to trail 53-50 and 8:03 on the clock.
  • Marian managed to extend its lead back out to eight points with 1:37 left to play but Lawrence didn’t go away quietly going on an 11-5 run to only trail 64-62 with 30 seconds remaining.
  • Junior Brandon Adorno would sink a pair of free throws to push the Marian lead to four points and the Sabres answered on the other end.
  • A final free throw from Vassilakis sealed the 67-62 final.

  • Marian was 25-of-56 (.446) from the field in the win and 7-of-21 (.333) on three-pointers.
  • Lawrence shot 21-of-43 (.488) and 6-of-20 (.300) from beyond the arc.
  • The Sabres struggled at the charity stripe only going 10-of-21 (.476) for the game.
  • The Vikings were 6-of-11 (.546) on three-pointer in the first half before the Sabre defense held Lawrence scoreless beyond the arc on nine shots in the second stanza.
  • Marian had 12 offensive rebounds to just one for Lawrence and outscored the Vikings 14-2 in second chance points.
  • The Sabres also had a 17-12 edge in points off turnovers.
  • Marian improves to 7-5 all-time against Lawrence, 5-1 at home, and continues its best known start to a season.

Junior Brandon Adorno scored a game-high 25 points and had four rebounds.
Sophomore Andrew Ayeni chipped in 17 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.
Junior Alex Vassilakis had eight points to go with a game-high nine rebounds.
