Marian men’s basketball beats UW-Stout to finish opening weekend

Marian University men’s basketball (2-0, 0-0 NACC) defeated UW-Stout 78-67 to open the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

  • The first half of the opening half saw the two squads battle to a 17-17 stalemate before Marian took the first sizeable lead with an 8-2 run.
  • This would be a lead that Marian wouldn’t relinquish for the remainder of the game.
  • Marian led by as much nine in the opening half and went into the break ahead 40-32 after a buzzer-beater lay-up from junior Trey Jenkins.
  • UW-Stout opened the second half scoring the first five points to trim the Sabre deficit down to one possession at three.
  • A 14-3 run from Marian saw the Sabres build its lead to 56-45 with 12:13 on the clock.
  • After a Blue Devil triple, junior Alex Vassilakis hit a triple of his own to give Marian a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
  • The Sabres built their lead to as large as 15 points before the final settled at 78-67.

  • Marian shot well from beyond the arc going 8-of-15 (.533) and shot 27-of-55 (.491) from the field.
  • UW-Stout finished 27-of-56 (.482) from the field and 10-of-25 (.400) on three-pointers.
  • The Sabres had 16 points come from the charity stripe compared to only three for the Blue Devils.
  • Marian finished with a 32-20 edge in points in the paint and had 11 offensive rebounds.
  • This is the first win for Marian over UW-Stout since Nov. 21, 1989.

Sophomore Sam Gingras was 8-of-10 (.800) from the field scoring a team-high 19 points.
Sophomore Andrew Ayeni finished with 18 points and four rebounds.
Junior Brandon Adorno came off the bench to score 10 points with six assists and two steals.
