Marian holds back Mount Mary for non-conference win

Marian University women’s basketball (2-5, 0-1 NACC) never trailed defeating Mount Mary 59-54.

  • The two offenses had a slow start but Marian was able to build a comfortable 17-9 lead with a 10-4 run over th final 4:26 of the quarter.
  • The Sabre defense then dominated the second quarter and outscored Mount Mary 15-3.
  • Marian allowed just one made field goal in the stanza and took a 32-12 lead into halftime.
  • The Sabres kept rolling to open the third opening the quarter with a 13-4 spurt to lead 45-16.
  • Mount Mary began to rally and closed out the quarter with a 14-4 run and only trailed 49-30 going into the fourth.
  • The Blue Angels continued to chip away at the Marian lead and trailed by as little as four at 58-54 with 32 seconds to play.
  • Mount Mary was able to outscore Marian 24-10 over the final 10 minutes.
  • Marian was able to hold off the late rally, however, setting the final at 59-54.

  • Marian held Mount Mary to 19-of-69 (.275) shooting with the Blue Angels only going 3-of-29 (.103) in the first half.
  • Offensively, the Sabres hit a season-high 11 three-pointers going 11-of-30 (.367) from beyond the arc.
  • Marian finished the game shooting 17-of-58 (.293) from the field.
  • The Sabres committed more turnovers at a 21-16 clip but outscored MMU 24-14 in points off turnovers.
  • Marian improves to 9-2 all-time against Mount Mary and has won the last three match-ups.

Sophomore Chelsea King added 13 points with eight rebounds and four assists.
Junior Lyla Bartol filled the stat sheet with four points, nine rebounds, and five steals.
