Marian flag football sweeps home triangular

Marian University women’s flag football (3-1) posted a pair of shutouts in its first home triangular.

UW-OSHKOSH (W, 22-0)

  • The two sides punted on their first drives before freshman Holly Goodwin dropped a 19-yard touchdown to sophomore Daniela Chaname.
  • Chaname converted the one-point try to give Marian a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
  • The Marian defense was able to secure its first safety when freshman Ava Kreger stuffed a rush in the Titan end zone.
  • The Sabres extended their lead with 5:41 left in the second quarter when Chaname ran in a one-yard touchdown and converted the one-point try.
  • Marian was able to maintain the 16-0 lead at halftime.
  • UW-Oshkosh was able to threaten in the fourth quarter bringing the ball to the Marian 14-yard line.
  • Junior Raegan Montello was able to turn around an interception and return it 65 yards to put a stamp on the 22-0 final.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN (W, 12-0)

  • There wasn’t much offense for either side but Marian was able to build momentum after an interception from sophomore Sofia Vizcarra at the two-minute timeout.
  • The Sabres were able to drive down the field but faced a fourth and goal from the three with 20 seconds left.
  • Marian was able to convert with freshman Holly Goodwin finding sophomore Emily Eastham to put Marian ahead 6-0 at halftime.
  • After a quite third quarter, IWU was able to drive deep into Marian territory and had first and goal from the 19.
  • The Sabre defense was able to stand tall with Goodwin intercepting a pass on the next play with 7:08 left.
  • A long drive for the Sabres helped ice the game and was capped off by a Chaname two-yard rushing touchdown with 1:54 left.
  • A Chaname interception on the ensuing drive sealed the 12-0 Marian win.

UW-OSHKOSH

  • The Marian defense held UW-Oshkosh to only two first downs and 58 total yards of offense.
  • The Sabres had 195 yards of offense behind a season-high 68 rushing yards.
  • Marian had two interceptions including a pick-six in the fourth quarter.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN

  • Marian had 201 total yards of offense with 148 yards coming through the air.
  • The Sabre defense had three interceptions and a season-high five sacks.
  • These were the first two shutouts in program history.

Sophomore Daniela Chaname had an interception in each game to go with two rushing touchdowns and one receiving on the day.
Freshman Holly Goodwin had 203 yards through the air between the two games to go with 67 yards rushing against UW-Oshkosh.
Junior Raegan Montello had six tackles and a pick six against UW-Oshkosh.
Sophomore Nyedeng Awak had three sacks against Illinois Wesleyan.
