Marian field hockey upsets Centre to open CFHC play

Marian University field hockey (7-3, 1-0 CFHC) opened conference play with a 3-2 overtime victory over Centre.

  • Marian controlled play for most of the day but it was Centre who opened the scoring with 9:39 left in the second quarter off of a penalty corner.
  • The Sabres were able to respond when senior Jikke Biemans evened the score with 2:22 left until halftime, assist to fellow senior Allyson Nichols.
  • The 1-1 stalemate held going into the break.
  • Marian was able to take its first lead of the game when freshman Charlotte Touw found enough room to score with 5:39 left in the third quarter, assist to junior Angelene Castro.
  • The Sabre advantage didn’t last long, however, as the Colonels found an equalizer on a similar penalty-corner goal just 2:08 later.
  • Marian dominated the final quarter and didn’t allow a single shot but the game still headed to overtime.
  • The Sabres were able to find their golden goal with 1:59 left in the first overtime when Biemans buried a rebound off of a shot from Touw.

  • Marian held a 20-8 advantage for shots and 12-7 edge for shots on goal.
  • The Sabres had 13 penalty corners to only seven for Centre.
  • Fouls were nearly even with Marian being called 56 times compared to 55 for Centre.
  • Marian improves to 3-1 this season in games that go to overtime.
  • This is the first victory for the Sabres over Centre in seven all-time games.
  • The victory is also the first time in program history Marian opened conference play with a win.

Senior Jikke Biemans had a multi-goal effort including the game-winner in overtime.
Junior Emilee Clarey (7-3) made five saves to earn the win, one of which came in the extra session.
Freshman Charlotte Touw had a goal and an assist, the fifth game this season where she played a factor in multiple goals.
