Marian field hockey completes sweep of Concordia Wisconsin

Marian University field hockey (5-4, 2-2 SAA) defeated Concordia Wisconsin 4-1 in non-conference action to complete a sweep of the Falcons.

  • Both offenses took a little time to get going and it wasn’t until 1:36 remained in the opening stanza that sophomore Merel Nagelkerke opened the scoring.
  • A scoreless second quarter saw the 1-0 Marian lead hold going into the break.
  • At the 36:25 mark, sophomore Jikke Biemans found the back of the cage with assists from fellow sophomore Eva Houtackers and freshman Angelene Castro.
  • The 2-0 edge held heading into the fourth quarter where CUW cut its deficit in half with 5:50 left to play.
  • Houtackers quickly gave Marian a two-goal lead scoring just 1:43 later.
  • She then iced the game and 4-1 final with her second goal of the game coming with just 26 ticks left in the game.

  • Marian held a 36-17 advantage in shots with a 25-12 edge in shots on goal.  Marian outshot the Falcons 26-14 in the second half.
  • Penalty corners saw a similar advantage at 17-8 with 11 of the Sabre penalty corners coming in the third quarter.
  • The Sabres improve to 4-0 all-time against CUW outscoring the Falcons 17-5.

Sophomore Eva Houtackers had her first multi-goal game of the season and added an assist.
Sophomore Kirstyn Wagner (2-0) had another strong performance in goal making 10 saves.
Sophomore Jikke Biemans netted a goal and added an assist to finish the weekend with two goals and three assists.
