Marian baseball sweeps Lakeland to continue winning streak

Marian University baseball (10-12, 4-6 NACC) pushed its winning streak to four games with wins of 20-15 and 10-0 in seven innings over Lakeland.

GAME 1 (W, 20-15)

  • Marian was able to get out to a fast start scoring 13 runs in the first three innings with 10 Sabres crossing home in the second.
  • Marian had four straight run-producing hits in that second inning capped with freshman Brody Nolan bringing home two with a single.
  • With the wind howling out to left field, no lead was safe as Lakeland scored five runs in the fifth to only trail 13-6.
  • Sophomore Ayden Kanaman had a response in the bottom half driving in two with a double to put Marian ahead 15-6.
  • Lakeland then scored nine unanswered runs with two in the sixth and seven in the eighth to tie the game at 15-15.
  • Freshman Connor Schroeder gave Marian the lead with a single in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Nolan then hit a grand slam to cap off a five-run frame that led Marian to a win.

GAME 2 (W, 10-0, 7 Innings)

  • Freshman Connor Schroeder opened the scoring for game two with a solo shot in the second.
  • Junior Danny Santiago followed later in the inning with a solo shot of his own to give Marian a 2-0 lead.
  • Schroeder continued his big day with a run-producing single in the third.
  • A second home run from Santiago in the fourth helped propel Marian toa. 5-0 lead.
  • The Sabres continued to pour on the runs in the sixth when junior Jason Sims had a bases-clearing double in the sixth.
  • Sophomore Ayden Kanaman was able to end the game early with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

  • Lakeland held a 22-18 advantage for hits in the game.
  • Marian had the lone defensive miscue of the game.
  • The Sabres drew eight walks and five hit by pitches in the game.
  • Four different Sabres had at least three hits.

GAME 2

  • Marian had 11 hits to only three for Lakeland.
  • The Sabres had the lone error of the game.
  • Marian offensively had six extra-base hits with four home runs.
  • Marian improves to 70-31 all-time against Lakeland with a 5-1 record over the last six games.

Freshman Bordy Nolan was 4-for-6 in game one with seven runs driven in and two runs scored.
Freshman Ian Dohms (1-1) tossed a shutout in game two allowing only three hits with six strikeouts.
