Marian baseball sweeps Allegheny to open season

 Marian University baseball (2-0, 0-0 NACC) defeated Allegheny 7-6 and 15-2 to open the season.

GAME 1 (W, 7-6, HOME)

  • Allegheny opened the scoring in a big way breaking through for four runs in the second frame.
  • The Sabres were able to take advantage of an error in the next half inning to trim the deficit to 4-1.
  • Another costly Gator error kept the third inning alive for Marian where graduate student Robbie Knorr was able to tie the game with a three-run triple.
  • Marian was able to take its first lead of the game at 6-4 in the next inning thanks to a passed ball and wild pitch.
  • Allegheny scored once in the next half inning and tied the game in the top of the seventh with a home run.
  • After two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, two walks and a hit by pitch setup a walk-off hit by pitch from senior Gus Walker.

GAME 2 (W, 15-2, AWAY)

  • A solo shot from senior James Bornick opened the scoring for game two to highlight a three-run third for the Sabres.
  • After the Gators scored a run in the third, sophomore Marc Jones and graduate student Logan Radmean each drove in two runs in the fourth to put Marian ahead 8-1.
  • Marian was able to break the game open scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth.
  • Jones capped off the big inning driving in another three runs with a double to left.
  • Allegheny managed a run in the bottom of the frame to set the final at 15-2.
  • This was the first two games between the two programs.

Sophomore Marc Jones was 3-for-6 (.500) on the day with two doubles and five driven in.
Senior Tanner Alsteen (1-0) went 6.0 innings allowing just one earned run in game two of the twin bill.
Graduate student Logan Rademan was 5-for-7 (.714) in the doubleheader with three runs driven in and two runs scored.
